Frequently Asked Questions
Do I Need Performing Experience To Take The Class?
No. This is an all/entry-level class. If you have performing experience that’s great. If performing is totally new to you, wonderful!

Can I Take This Class If I've Done Standup and/or Taken a Standup Class Before?
You bet! We will occasionally offer classes specifically for those with prior class or equivalent experience, but any and all levels of experience are welcome in this particular class.

What If I’m Not Sure If I’m Funny?
You already sound like a comedian! Some people say you can’t teach someone to be funny. Maybe. But we believe everyone is funny is some way. Part of the fun of this class is helping you to discover what is funny to you and how to communicate that in a way that resonates with others.

I Might Have to Miss a Class, Is That Okay?
Life is busy. We hope you’re able to make it to each class, but if not, that’s okay. We will work with you to make accommodations where possible.
What If I’m Terrified of Public Speaking?
That’s allowed. Nerves are a normal part of standup. In this class, we’ll explore how things like preparation and repetition can help with public speaking. You’ll also practice how to channel nerves to help you overcome stage fright.
I’m Under 19, Am I Allowed In The Venue?
Chill X Studio is a licensed establishment. If you are under 19 years old you are welcome to take the Sunday afternoon classes with us but you would unfortunately NOT be legally allowed to participate in the student showcase show. However, in this scenario we would work with you to find an all-ages alternative. We do hope to offer a class specifically for teens in the future. If you are under 19 and eager to take this class, please contact us using the contact form at the bottom of this page.
I’m a Senior, Will I Feel Out of Place?
We hope not. In the past student ages range from early 20’s to early 70’s. This particular class is open to adults of all ages/not specific to any one age demographic.

Isn’t Standup Comedy Being Killed by “Cancel Culture”?
Naw. Standup Comedy is not negatively affected by “Cancel Culture” the same way it is not negatively affected by the tooth fairy and other imaginary things. That said, if you are sincerely concerned that “you can’t say anything anymore” it’s possible you won’t enjoy this class. You have every right to say whatever you want on your own platforms, but within the class and student showcase there will be an expected code of conduct, which must be signed and returned before the start of classes. We expect and cultivate an environment free from any deliberate racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, ablism, agism and any language designed to demean or dehumanize any group or marginalized individual.
Who Would Win in a Fight Between Cap’N Crunch & Captain Morgan?
Hmm, I don’t know what cereal or rum mascots have to do with an introductory standup comedy class, but okay. Interesting query. On the one hand, Captain Morgan is backed by the bravado of all the nation’s pub crawls and you know he’s not afraid to get a bit spicy. On the other, Cap’N has the dignity of a man in uniform, so you know he’ll fight for not only his own pride but the honour of his men. I imagine he has some pent-up aggression for being made to endure the indignity of his title being abbreviated. Plus, you gotta image he’s tough as nails if his morning breakfast is one that will tear the roof of your mouth apart. Captain Morgan will come in swinging and no doubt put up a good fight, but ultimately in this match of mascot titans, my money’s on the Cap’N.
